Increased Cruise Visits an Encouraging Sign
Written by Administrator | 24.11.11
The Cruise industry in Guyana has seen some increase in arrivals at local shores this year. The SAGA PEARL II called at GNSC’s La Penitence wharf in February with some 352 passengers and 268 crew for a one-day stopover On 12th March, the sleek, elegant 100 m ‘yacht’, Le Levant docked at the Guyana National Industrial Company’s (GNIC) terminal. GNIC is the local authorised cargo handler for the CMA-CGM Group to which the Levant belongs, and GNSC is the local agent for Saga Shipping of the UK. The MV Clelia II also docked at the GNSC terminal in April having sailed to Guyana from Sao Luis, one of the tributaries that flow off the Amazon River in neighbouring Brazil.

The unique piece of equipment is located in the Guyana National Shipping Corporation (GNSC) compound and the GRA said it has been constantly revising schedules and operations to overcome the initial teething problems.

In an effort to foster improvements in trading activities in Guyana, the Shipping Association of Guyana has been vigorously advocating for the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) to implement a single window for trade transactions in Guyana. Head of the GRA, Khurshid Sattaur, said at a business meeting with exporters last May that funds were made available for the implementation the first stage of the intricate, fully computerised state-of-the-art Single Window Automated Processing System (SWAPS). The electronic system is expected bring significant benefits for both the GRA and the business owners who utilize the Customs’ services.
Marad asked to Resuscitate Maritime Security Committee

COMMENT
For as long as one can remember no major rehabilitation has taken place in the central harbor of Port Georgetown which is the hub of trading activities in the country. Terminal operators, shipping companies and their agents have been lobbying the Maritime Administration Department for some time in an effort to bring relief for navigators in the Demerara channel.
With a low tide draught of 4.5 metres, vessels are forced to enter or leave with half their full loads which results in less exports and imports and higher freight costs over which operators have no control. It is known that higher costs always trickle down to the end user. The Dredger owned by the Maritime Administration Department, the ‘Steve N’, is approximately 30 years old and has become less productive, struggling to carry out even routine dredging and would definitely not be able to undertake the capital dredging that is needed.
