Port Georgetown

Port Georgetown is situated on the north coast of Guyana along the East Bank of the Demerara River. It stretches for 16 km inward from the river mouth along the Demerara ship channel, with an average depth of 4.5 metres at low tide. Since 1 July 1999 the port has been run by a Maritime Administration Department operating under the aegis of the Maritime Act.

Previously, port operations were administered by the Transport & Harbours Department as an agency of the Ministry of Works & Transport. Port Georgetown has a number of independent pier operators, either privately owned or public corporations. Principal among these are John Fernandes Ltd, Muneshwers Ltd, Guyana National Shipping Corporation Ltd, Guyana National Industrial Company Inc, Demerara Shipping Company Ltd, Demerara Sugar Terminals Ltd, and Deo’s International Distribution Company Ltd (DIDCO). The Guyana Sugar Corporation operates a bulk loading facility for sugar and the Caribbean Molasses Company Ltd has a similar facility for molasses. These operators and other stakeholders have come together to form the Shipping Association of Guyana to present a unified front in pursuit of common interests.

Working Hours: Monday to Thursday 08:00 hrs to 16:30 hrs, Friday 08:00 hrs to 15:30 hrs. Lunch 12:00 hrs to 13:00 hrs. Closed on all Public Holidays. Overtime by special arrangement.

Terminals: Monday to Friday 07:00 hrs to 16:00 hrs (this varies from one to the other).  Closed on all Public Holidays. Overtime by special arrangement.

Imports – Containerized(foodstuff, clothing and textiles, general merchandise and hardware, motor vehicles), Break Bulk, Petroleum, Heavy duty machinery.

Exports – Sugar, Rice, Bauxite, Rum, marine products, gold, lumber and metal scrap.

Towage – This is provided by several companies and could be facilitated by various Pier Operators.

Maximum Draught in the channel – 5.5m; Alongside Terminal – 7m.

Approach: Via Demerara River.  Main approach is 10 km long, 70 metres wide and 5.0 metres deep. Landmarks: Chateau Margot chimney and Georgetown lighthouse beacon.  
Transport:  All berths linked by road.  Inland and onward transport is by truck or by river and coastal vessels.   Cheddi Jagan International (Timehri) Airport is 47 km from the seaport.

Anchorage: Five anchorage points with water depths of 58 metres, 6.4 metres, 6.7 metres, 61 metres and 5.5 metres.

Pilotage: Pilot boards at Demerara Light House (outer Georgetown) Pilot Station.
