The Shipping Association of Guyana (SAG) met last Tuesday with several of its members and the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) to discuss a range of concerns and challenges currently facing the shipping and logistics industry-issues which directly impact end users in Guyana.

Key areas discussed included:
- Demurrage
- Port management
- Delays in the processing of documents by brokers
- Applications for special import licenses for certain products
- Inefficiencies at various operational levels
- Delays in clearing items at the airport
- The Trusted Traders programme
- Port congestion
- Remittances of freight charges to parent companies
- Increase in freight rates
- Port development
- Dredging and other related matters
Many of these issues will require consultation with the relevant government agencies and key stakeholders, with the objective of reducing bottlenecks that ultimately lead to increased costs for consumers. in this regard, SAG is committed to coordinate meeting with the appropriate stakeholders to address the concerns raised. Port operators also committed to reviewing several of the issues highlighted during the discussions.
Additionally, port operators reaffirmed their commitment to working closely with brokers and agents to identify ways to improve operational efficiencies across the sector.
